Birrong’s name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning “star”, a fitting detail for a suburb with such a strong local identity. The name was adopted during the 1920s, around the same time the railway began bringing more families and activity to the district. This early chapter remains part of the story of Birrong, NSW.
The railway station opened in 1928 and made travel between Birrong, Bankstown, Lidcombe and the city much easier. During the Great Depression, relief workers drained land around Birrong Park that had regularly flooded, helping turn it into a place the community could use for sport and recreation.
Birrong now belongs to the City of Canterbury-Bankstown. Auburn Road provides the suburb’s everyday shops and cafés, while the aquatic centre, playing fields and local schools keep the area busy throughout the week.
