Darlington began taking shape during the nineteenth century, growing into a tightly settled neighbourhood of workers’ cottages and terraces close to factories, workshops and the railway. Its name is linked to William Vane, the 3rd Earl of Darlington.
The suburb changed significantly during the twentieth century when the University of Sydney expanded beyond its original grounds. Streets and houses were acquired for new university buildings, reducing the residential footprint of Darlington, NSW and bringing campus life much closer to the remaining neighbourhood.
Despite those changes, Darlington has held onto plenty of its older character.
