Ultimo’s unusual name dates back to surgeon John Harris, who received a large land grant here in the early nineteenth century. His estate was known as Ultimo, a name that eventually came to identify the surrounding neighbourhood.
Industry later transformed the area. Woolstores, factories and railway goods yards brought workers and businesses into Ultimo, NSW, while the imposing Ultimo Power House supplied electricity to Sydney’s tram network. That building would eventually find a very different purpose as the Powerhouse Museum.
Much of the heavy industry has disappeared, but traces of it remain among converted warehouses and heritage buildings. Now part of the City of Sydney, Ultimo is particularly known for education and technology, with university campuses, student accommodation and creative organisations bringing a younger rhythm to the neighbourhood.
