Glebe’s name reaches back to the earliest years of colonial Sydney. In 1789, Governor Arthur Phillip granted land here to the Anglican Church, with the word “glebe” traditionally referring to land provided to support a parish minister.
As Sydney grew, estates were divided, and new streets appeared, leaving Glebe, NSW with an impressive collection of nineteenth-century terraces and cottages. Many of these older homes remain a defining part of the suburb, particularly around its quieter residential streets.
