Panania’s name was chosen before the suburb had fully taken shape. It appeared on a list of proposed stations for the new Tempe–East Hills railway in 1929, when the surrounding district was still better known for orchards, poultry farms and scattered rural properties.
The most familiar interpretation of the name is an Aboriginal expression meaning “sun rising in the east and shining on the hills.” Other names, including Nioka, Linden Park and Elmswood, were considered during railway planning, but Panania was ultimately selected. Everything changed when the station opened on 21 December 1931 as part of the East Hills railway extension.
